Currently, certain residential buildings in Peter-McGill district already provide for food waste pick-up, and two other neighbourhoods have been added to the list.
(For details about where and when this program applies, check the map and schedule!) Outreach workers will be going door-to-door in the areas concerned to provide information and deliver an explanatory card.
MATERIALS PROVIDED
— one 7-litre countertop container
— one 47-litre brown bin to put outside on collection day
— compostable bags in which to store your food waste
DID YOU KNOW?
Food waste bags must be marked “compostable”, not merely “biodegradable”. Biodegradable bags are not suitable for composting, because they take a very long time to break down, unlike compostable bags.
If you do not live within the target areas or if you live in an apartment building of 8 or more units, there are other options to help you to keep kitchen waste out of landfill:
— community composting
— vermicomposting (see above for our next workshop on May 16 from 6 to 7:30 pm)
— garden composter
