Are you encountering safety issues in your housing?

The Housing Committee of Ville-Marie is currently providing resources to its citizens who are facing safety issues in their accommodation.

“An ideal housing fosters physical and mental health. It provides to its occupants a certain psychological security, physical links with their community and their culture, as well as the mean of expressing their individuality”, according to the World Health Organization’s definition. Unfortunately, the rental housing situation in Montreal still has progress to make.  Indeed, according to the Société d’Habitation du Québec, 28% of the household tenants reported facing at least one safety issue. In Montreal, the Public Health Direction claims that close to one third of the accommodations are substandard or dangerous. In addition to having severe impacts on the tenants’ living conditions, the insalubrity of the apartments is a characteristic of important social inequalities.

Often, in the absence of resources, some people are forced to stay in accommodations in poor condition. In order to try to eradicate this situation, the Housing Committee of Ville-Marie provides information and resources for people that are facing safety issues in their housings.

If you have safety or cleaning issues in your accommodation, here is how to proceed:

You must notify your landlord, by registered mail, ordering him to carry out the necessary corrections. You give him a period of ten (10) working days, or less, if there is an emergency, mentioning that, in case of lack of actions, a copy of the letter will be send to the city.

If, in spite of the efforts made to come to a satisfying settlement, the problem is not fixed, an intervention request, accompanied with this letter (the formal notice), and the mail receipt of expedition, must be made to the City of Montreal.

To this end, head to the counter “Access Ville-Marie” OR contact the 311 service.

You must redirect your letter and expedition receipt to the Urban Planning and Business Services Direction of the district.

By a fax machine or by mail:

To the Urban Planning and Business Services Direction of the district. District of Ville-Marie
