Example of a fall garden:
BEETS
- Spacing between plants: 20 cm
- Distance between rows: 40 cm minimum
GARLIC
- Spacing between plants: 10-15 cm
- Distance between rows: 20-25 cm minimum
- Divide the bulbs gently a little before planting to avoid drying out. Plant each bulb separately, pointing upwards and covering them with 2-3 cm of soil.
EGYPTIAN ONION
- Spacing between plants: 10 cm
- Distance between rows: 50 cm
- Plant a bulbille in the sun in any well-drained soil, even poor or sandy, in the vegetable garden or in the flower bed, barely covering it with soil. The most logical time to plant them is in the fall (August, September or October), when the bulbils are mature.
TULIPS
- Spacing between plants: 10 cm
- Distance between rows: 10-15 cm
- Planting in batches of 10, 20, 30 … 50 tulips is the best effect!
- Each tulip bulb should be planted in a hole that is three times the size of the bulb.
CROCUS
- Spacing between plants: 15-20 cm
- Plant the bulbs in groups of 3 to 5
- Each crocus should be buried about 5 cm deep.
NARCISSUS
- Spacing between plants: 10-15 cm
- Plant the bulbs in groups of 5 to 10
- The bulbs should be buried 2-3 times the height of the bulb, i.e. 10 to 20 cm deep.
Tips to protect and nourish your garden during winter:
- Remember, it is always beneficial to add compost when planting, whether in spring or fall.
- It is also important and necessary to put some mulch around your plants, whether it is dead leaves, straw strands, ramial chipped wood (RCW) and even compost!
- In winter, the more your soil is protected by organic matter, the richer it will be in nutrients and therefore prepared for spring planting.
