A greening project with the Montreal Diet Dispensary

The Eco-Quartier Peter-McGill is proud to announce its partnership with the Montreal Diet Dispensary to promote greening project outside the Dispensary facilities.

Located at the corner of Lincoln and Lamber Closs streets, the Dispensary is placed in a mineralized heat island where vegetation is missing.

This project aims at increasing green spaces by creating a vegetable garden in bins on the Dispensary’s galery. In order to promote biodiversity, the front of the building will also be converted in order to leave room for indigenous species such as milkweed (which is essential for the Monarch butterfly), the Monarde bee or the Cone flower. The lawn will be replaced by a groundcover especially chosen for its plants diversity, increasing biodiversity in the meantime since it doesn’t need to be mowed.

This project is all about the Dispensary’s mission to offer nutritional and social support to pregnant women in need. They will therefore be able to become familiar with fruit and vegetable cultivation during workshops or simply by harvesting the fruits and vegetables in order to cook.

The partnership also reflects the greening mission of the Eco-Quartier Peter-McGill. In order to respect all the norms and values in effect at the Eco-Quartier, no pesticide nor artificial fertilizers will be used. All the fruits and vegetables harvested will be of organic quality on top of being respectful to the environment and human health.

This project was made possible thanks to the generosity of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation which provided a grant to cover the project’s costs. The hardware store Rona Notre Dame’s help should also be highlighted as they helped getting the necessary material at lower costs.
